YNPN Report
In January of 2007, YNPN surveyed over 10,000 of its members to obtain their attitudes and perspective on leadership development and career progression in the sector. While there has been a steady series of reports on leadership in the sector, few have been written from the point of view of young nonprofit professionals. We received over 1,600 responses and compiled the Stepping Up or Stepping Out report.
Since its publication, additional studies, like Ready to Lead from CompassPoint, Meyer Foundation, and Idealist, have backed up our findings with respect to the challenges and opportunities facing the sector in retaining top talent. The full report can be found here.

Featured Chapter of the Month
YNPNdc welcomes new board members!
At the beginning of August, 20 young nonprofit leaders began the 2008-2009 term on the YNPNdc Board of Directors. One third of those board members were on the board the previous year as well. This combination of experience and new talent is a testament to the organization’s strength and growing influence.
A small leadership team founded YNPN’s Washington , DC chapter in 2003, and it has grown exponentially in the last five years. Chapter membership is approximately 3,500 – an impressive number in a city where young professionals are especially transient. YNPNdc hosts 4-6 events a month, including monthly networking happy hours, professional development workshops, speed networking nights, and discussion forums on topics such as the leadership gap.
In the last year, YNPNdc has achieved several milestones. Notably, the chapter received its 501(c)3 status from the IRS. It also received its first grant, in the amount of $5,000, from the Meyer Foundation, to use for capacity building.
According to Dave Algoso and Dan Dobin, the recently elected co-chairs of the YNPNdc Board, there are several priorities for the coming year: expanding the network and strengthening the involvement of its members; celebrating the 5th anniversary of the chapter; and hosting the YNPN leaders conference in Spring 2009, bringing this annual gathering of chapter leaders to the nation’s capital for the first time.
