BrainFood empowers business leaders, owners, and entrepreneurs to profitably exploit the challenges posed by today's rapidly changing world
The mission
Not too long ago, Bob Dylan warned us that “times they are a changin’.” Not necessarily big news, Bob, since things have been changing for about four billion years. But, of late, the pace of change has been accelerating… greatly! So far, most of that change has been good. Over time we’ve been learned how to walk, talk, and wonder. Even the dinosaurs have disappeared.
Some, like climatists and clerics have warned that there has been too much change. Sweeping change – even the good kind – can have transformative effects on nature, politics, the economy, science, and the physiology of whatever creatures happen to be around at the time. The consequences can be life-altering.
Whether things are turning good or bad is an individual judgment. But, when aggregated, winds of change can fuse into determinative social and economic trends with tornado-like force. “For… against… fearful of… resistant to… or determined about” are some of our options when reacting to the kind of morphing that results.
The wise among us are usually “determined” when it comes to change in their realms. While others may simply decide to accommodate new circumstances as safely as possible, our most optimistic, dogged, industrious, and progressive compatriots typically resolve to exploit change, modify it, or even create some change of their own. (You go, guys!) Indeed, “making your own kind of change” is probably the primary key to long run business success
The beat goes on . Whatever your predilection, you surely must agree that we all live in a world that hosts an environment that is perpetually gusty, variable, uncertain, threatening, and even, at times, “sunny with a chance of meatballs.” The winners in this kind of situation are the ones who know how to trim and tack their sails and set a course to make the best of the prevailing winds. “Carpe venti” is their motto. (Google doesn’t define “venti” probably because it’s the plural of another word in Latin… which can be found with just a little extra effort.)
In the business world, we’ve moved at an ever- quickening pace from caves, to bazaars, to factories and stores, to electronic marketplaces served by robots and AI. For some enterprisers like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Kaiser, Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk (to name too many, already) the ride has been exhilarating, fun, and profitable. (Hmmm. Not so sure about Musk.) For most of us otherwise-busy denizens, the ever-undulating tsunami of change has become downright scary. The nature of jobs is changing dramatically, entire industries are disappearing, and eruptions in technology give us a jolt daily.
The task
So, what’s a business leader to do? Join the dinosaurs? Jump ship… if it’s not too late? Find a bigger fool to take his or her now endangered endeavors off his hands? Or, fight a good fight, win, and enjoy the excitement and treasures that change produces for those who carpe venti? (OK. OK. It’s time you looked it up!)
But, being victorious in today’s arena of change will require some – nay, a lot of – new knowledge, skills, strengths, insights, and attitudes. The old Wonder Bread commercials claimed that their dough would help you “build strong bodies eight ways!” Well, that’s not nearly nourishing enough for business leaders nowadays. What’s needed today is 21st century BrainFood, a mix of enlightening, energizing, and empowering know-how that will empower you to grab change by the tail and bend its will to yours.

So, don’t let any bully kick sand in the gears of your business. Don’t become a victim of change like those many souls at Sears, Circuit City, EF Hutton, Xerox, Kodak, Blackberry, Blockbuster Hostess, my Space, Yahoo, Lehman Brothers, Borders, Polaroid, Hummer, Food Locker, WamU, Kodak, and Bear Stearns, not to mention thousands of other medium-sized ventures, family businesses, and mom-and-pop shops that pooped-out as the winds of change made the going get tough. Even Lionel chugged into a tunnel and never came out.
If you – like so many – are dazzled, confused, or threatened by all that’s going on these days; you are not ready for tomorrow. Might as well jump into your Hummer and head for the hills. Tomorrow is coming FAST… in the next twenty-four hours, in fact.
